Analysis of a trailer- se7en (1995)

Se7en (1995) is an American Neo-Noir mystery thriller that stars Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman and kevin spacey in the lead roles.

0.02: The production company NEW LINE CINEMA comes into view.

2.04: The main title comes into view near the end of the trailer:

2.11: The final credits for the film are shown which details the production company logo, the main producers, the lead cast, and other influential people in the making of the film such as the director and camera crew.

In between the main features of the trailer which are shown above, their are various micro elements that make the trailer stand out. for example from 0.15 seconds onward non-diegetic suspenseful music is played throughout the trailer as well as a voice over from several different characters to tell the audience the plot. This also builds anticipation for the audience as the music turns eerie and the voice over informs the audience of vital details about the films narrative. For example that Morgan Freeman's character is on the verge of retirement. This is juxtaposed to Brad Pitt's character who is very impulsive and is early in his police career. This is an example of levy-Strauss's theory of binary opposites where young and old work together.

There is a referential code of the seven deadly sins: gluttony, pride , greed, envy, lust, wrath and sloth. These are referred to on several occasions in the trailer as the seven deadly sins are central to the films narrative where two detectives (Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt) try to catch a sadistic serial killer played by Kevin Spacey who is obsessed with the seven deadly sins. So he attempts to kill seven unlucky victims who display each sin. From 1.42 the seven deadly sins are flashed on the screen. This also occurs at 1.48 and 2.06. This connotes that the murders have a religious value in the film.

In terms of Vladimir Propp's narrative theory Kevin Spacey's character would be the villain and Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt character's would be the hero's of the film. Brad Pitts character's wife in the film, Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow) would be the donor because she provides Morgan Freeman's character with essential information. This information is that she is pregnant which only becomes relevant in the later stages of the film.

According to Todorov's narrative theory: the start of the film is an Equilibrium but once the detectives start to investigate the murder's there is a disruption. The realisation is that the murders are linked. Order is restored when Doe is eventually apprehended (standard narrative structure of crime thrillers) and finally there is Equilibrium again at the conclusion of the film.
